October 2005 | Risk SummaryTaiwanese President Chen Shui-bian has sacked two senior advisers in an attempt to silence allegations of government corruption that is threatening to destroy the clean image of his Democratic Progressive Party. Suspicion has been aroused by ongoing investigations into Chen Che-nan and Chen Min-hsien, whose names are at the centre of a controversy over alleged irregularities in a public construction project. The sacking of the two advisers comes just two months before local elections in Taiwan, which are being seen as an important mid-term test of public opinion before the Taiwan's next presidential elections in 2008.
