The six nations involved in multilateral talks aimed at persuading North Korea to scrap its nuclear weapons programme have decided to take a three-week break after negotiators were unable to agree on a joint statement. During the 13 days of discussion, the US called for Pyongyang to dismantle its weapons in exchange for much needed aid and electricity for its moribund economy. But North Korea objected to the American demand for all its atomic energy programmes to be abandoned. The recess will give weary envoys the chance to consult their governments, but this could strengthen support for more coercive measures
