July 2005 | Risk Summary

A Taiwanese warship made a visit to the disputed fishing grounds in June, after Taiwanese fishermen complained of harassment by Japanese patrol boats. Defence Minister Lee Jye and a group of other MPs were aboard the frigate, which visited the area around the Diaoyu islands. The frigate later returned to Taiwan without incident. The Diaoyu islands, known in Japanese as the Senkaku, are claimed by Taiwan, China and Japan. The government decided to send the warship after criticism by the opposition, which claimed that the government was failing to stand up to Japan and China.
