June 2005 | Risk SummaryUzbekistan's President Islam Karimov has announced the completion of a US$600mn oil deal with China. The move reflects China's broader strategy in central Asia, which remains a potential source of large quantities of oil. The agreement came despite growing international criticism of Mr Karimov, for ordering a violent crackdown against demonstrators, which led to the death of hundreds of demonstrators. China has traditionally refused to criticise the human rights record of other countries, although the fact that it has agreed the oil deal with Uzbekistan at such a sensitive time, is testament to the priority that Beijing now attaches to
