June 2005 | Risk SummaryPresident Chen Shui-bian and his Democratic Progressive Party won 42% of the vote in Taiwan's recent National Assembly elections, compared with only 39% for the opposition Kuomintang party. The vote, which were being regarded in Taiwan as a vote of confidence on Chen's policy towards mainland China, will reduce the pressure on the president to make concessions to the Chinese. The vote is also important, since it gives the two main parties enough support to push through changes to the constitution, including plans to halve the number of lawmakers, while reducing the influence of smaller parties in the parliament.
