Lien Chan, the leader of Taiwan's opposition party, has completed a highly symbolic visit to China, becoming the first nationalist party leader to visit the mainland since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949. During the visit at the end of April, Lien met with Chinese President Hu Jintao, and the two leaders agreed to end the mutual hostility between their two parties. Although Lien Chan is not Taiwan's head of state, the visit should help ease relations between China and Taiwan, which have been strained following China's recent introduction of a controversial anti-secession law.
