Diplomatic tensions between Japan and South Korea are worsening after Tokyo approved a textbook that critics say whitewashes Japan's militaristic past. The bilateral relationship has deteriorated since a Japanese assembly stressed Tokyo's ownership of two South Korean-held islands, a claim reiterated in other school books. The flaring up of these historical disputes has already cancelled visits, amid official South Korean protests, and a schism between the Asian neighbours could undermine effective policy towards North Korea.
