Chiang Pin-kung, the vice-chairman of Taiwan's opposition Nationalist (Kuomintang, KMT) party, has completed an historic five-day visit to China, aimed at easing cross-strait tensions. This follows the introduction of a controversial anti-secession law by China, which codifies Chinese threats to use 'non-peaceful means' against Taiwan to prevent the island from declaring independence. During the visit, Chiang met with Chen Yunlin, minister of China's policy-making Taiwan Affairs Office, where he discussed the possibility of opening direct non-stop air and shipping links between Taiwan and the mainland. China has so far refused to deal with Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian and his pro-independence
