Death Of Zhao Ziyang Passes Without Major Protest

The death of Zhao Ziyang, the former Communist Party chief who lost his job for siding with the students during the Tiananmen Square Massacre of 1989, has passed without major protest. This will come as a relief to China's top leadership, who were concerned that Zhao's death could lead to the kind of mass mourning that followed the death of another reformist leader, Hu Yaobang, which culminated in the Tiananmen square protests and eventually the massacre on June 4 1989.
