June 2004 | Risk SummaryThe US has welcomed Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian's inauguration speech as 'responsible and constructive' for avoiding a possible showdown with China over the island's political status. Chen was inaugurated on May 20, despite ongoing appeals by the opposition over the disputed election. In his speech, marking the start of a second four-year term, Chen said that Taiwan was open to any form of future ties with China while, importantly, not reiterating his previous assertion that the island was an independent and sovereign nation.
