March 2004 | Risk SummaryThe incumbent, President Chen Shui-bian, has been re-elected as president in Taiwan in highly controversial elections, by a slim majority of just 30,000 votes. The day before the polls opened, the president and his deputy were shot and injured while campaigning. The opposition has refused to accept the results of the election, claiming that there is too much uncertainty surrounding the failed assassination attempt. The president himself has called for the votes to be recounted, but this is not expected to take place immediately. The current uncertainty is expected to continue for the next couple of weeks.
