Amid rising levels of social discontent in China's poor rural hinterlands, the Chinese government has announced a major increase in government spending for the poor rural areas. The government will increase expenditure by RMB30bn to RMB150bn in a number of areas, including rural infrastructure, public health, education, and direct subsidies to farmers.
