Minister Khin Yi recently rejected a request from the UN to investigate whether or not the Rohingyas in Rakhine state had been mistreated by security forces during sectarian riots in the region. Official estimates indicate that at least 80 people have died as a result of violence between the Rohingya (who are considered to be illegal immigrants despite many having lived in the area for multiple generations) and native Rakhine people that erupted in June. Despite reports that the situation had cooled down, a government official stated on August 6th that three additional deaths had occurred, indicating that tensions may still be high.
