August 2012 | Ratings UpdateThe Japanese government recently signed an agreement with Vientiane to provide US$1.3mn to fund two new unexploded ordinance clearance projects in the provinces of Champassak and Attapeu. The project will involve Japanese company Japan Mine Action Service (JMAS) clearing 340 hectares of land and providing local staff with clearance techniques over three years. This follows a pledge by Japan in March to provide Laos with a low-interest loan facility to build a power system development project. We note that bilateral relations between the two countries have strengthened in recent months and this could possibly be a strong signal that Japanese investment activity in Laos could pick up going forward.
