July 2012 | Ratings UpdateReturning from a five-country, landmark tour of Europe, Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi has stated that she would be prepared to serve as the country's president should the opportunity arrive in general elections slated for 2015. Key challenges await Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy (NLD) party, which gained its first foothold in parliament following by-elections in April. With only 44 out of a total of 664 seats, the NLD will be hard-pressed to make its mark when parliament reconvenes on July 15, and a number of contentious issues such as the ongoing debate over the rights of the Rohingya ethnic group await.
