June 2012 | Risk Summary

The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP)'s decision to declare incumbent Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani ineligible to hold public office on June 19 is unlikely to throw the country into a full-blown political crisis. The move was to be expected following the Speaker of the National Assembly (NA) Fehmida Mirza's decision to rule against Gilani's disqualification on May 24. We note that the Pakistan People's Party (PPP)-led government still has a strong enough majority in the NA to elect a new prime minister from within the party, thus ensuring some semblance of political continuity.
