External Debt Risks Underappreciated

Having ramped up external commercial borrowings in recent years, corporate India is facing a much higher debt servicing burden in local currency terms following the precipitous decline in the value of the rupee. Coupled with weaker cash flows, we expect a rise in restructuring and defaults amongst small and medium sized exporters, which are particularly reliant on overseas markets to raise funds.
