The Hong Kong government recently announced that private hospitals would not be allowed to accept bookings from mainland mothers hoping to give birth in the city beginning next year. The move comes in a bid to stem the huge influx of women from the mainland seeking a quick route towards attaining education and residency rights through giving birth in the city. The government has been struggling to placate the general public following the city's high cost of living and unaffordable housing problems.
