US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert Blake stated in an interview that the US will not be pushing for economic sanctions on the island nation despite further calls for an investigation into alleged war crimes, according to a March 21 report by Lanka Business Online. Blake said that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP)-led coalition government should move faster on political reconciliation between the country's previously-warring communities. The government has long been at odds with (mainly) Western governments over alleged human rights violations committed towards the end of the island's long-running civil war, and the US' latest rhetoric will unlikely quell these tensions.
