March 2012 | Risk SummaryOn March 20, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of the ruling Awami League (AL) charged that the leader of its main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Khaleda Zia and her deputies, only ended their boycott of parliament to save their memberships and to continue receiving the financial benefits owed to lawmakers. Opposition lawmakers returned to the Jatiya Sangsad (National Assembly) on March 18, after having been absent since March 2011. The lack of formal and constructive political dialogue between the two main parties often leads to politically-organised public episodes of unrest, which, over the long term, leads to the slow decay of Bangladesh's investment appeal.
