The city's top official presently faces a corruption probe and allegations of ethical violations amid reports that have surfaced suggesting that he accepted perks from local tycoons, including luxury yatch and private jet trips. Beijing-favoured CE candidate Henry Tang has also come under attack with reports of extramarital affairs and illegal modification of his basement marring election campaign. The political scandal casts a shadow on China's unwillingness to relinquish control over Hong Kong's leadership elections and bolsters the call for universal suffrage sooner rather than later. As a result, we believe that 2017 is likely to be an inflection point in the city's political landscape.
