January 2012 | Ratings UpdateIncumbent president Ma Ying-jeou of the Kuomintang heads into the final election days with a considerable lead over main opposition Democratic People's Party Tsai Ing-wen in the final opinion polls. Despite this, we still believe the presidential elections are too close to call as a considerable number of swing voters could turn the tides on Ma. Moreover, the sudden withdrawal of People First Party chairman James Soong could completely alter the election landscape. Regardless of who wins, over the longer term, we do not envisage a material change in Taiwan's cross-strait relations or its business environment.
