On January 2, the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) stated that a decision by the ruling government to re-establish the caretaker government (CG) system would be the only way to foster political stability in the country and that the restoration of the system was both a party and public demand. The BNP is accusing the ruling Awami League for the recent spate of political unrest. The government scrapped the CG system last July when the Jatiya Sangsad (Bangladesh's parliament) easily passed the 15th amendment to the country's constitution. The abolition of the old system means that from now on, elections will be held under incumbent governments.
