Foreign Minister Gamini Lakshman Peiris stated that the government is aiming for stronger economic relationships with ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) states in order for the Island nation to benefit from the 'enormous growth potential' of the region. The minister stated that Malaysia was already one of the top investors in Sri Lanka. Recently, Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang visited the country along with a substantial business delegation to strengthen ties with local firms and trade bodies. Sri Lanka's participation in the security-focused ASEAN Regional Forum should help the government in their endeavour to boost economic ties.
