In line with our expectations, anti-Pakistani rhetoric has flared up in the midst of the ongoing battle between US Republican presidential hopefuls. In general, the field criticised the current US policy towards Pakistan, questioning whether Islamabad is a trustworthy ally. Governor of Texas Rick Perry stated that Pakistan did not deserve US assistance because the country had not done enough to crack down on militant groups. Michelle Bachmann, a member of the House Intelligence Committee termed Pakistan a 'violent and unstable' country. We do not expect the hawkish rhetoric from the Republican candidates to lead to a souring of broader US-Pakistani relations.
