November 2011 | Risk SummaryA High Court in Sri Lanka sentenced Sarath Fonseka, the former army chief and presidential candidate, to three years in jail after he was found guilty for making false allegations against President Mahinda Rajapaksa's brother. The allegations were that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the current Defence Secretary, committed human rights violations by ordering the execution of surrendering rebels towards the end of the country's long-running civil war. Fonseka is already serving a two and a half year prison term after he was found guilty of irregularities in military procurements. As long as Fonseka remains in prison, a strong political opposition against the ruling government may take time to materialise.
