October 2011 | Ratings UpdateTaiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou caused a storm recently when he mooted the idea of signing a peace treaty with China within the next decade. In our view, this is clearly a pre-election move to firstly, assuage concerns from China regarding the party's post-election stance on cross-strait policy, and secondly, garner the votes of those within the electorate who are looking towards a peaceful resolution to the island's long-standing ambiguous relationship with China. We do not see this as anything more than election rhetoric, and such a move is unlikely to materialise. As a result, we do not see a change
