October 2011 | Risk SummaryAmidst the long-running western criticism of the government's alleged human rights violations towards the end of the country's civil war, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ratcheted up the intensifying rhetoric by taking a swipe at advanced economies. Rajapaksa, speaking to the Commonwealth Business Forum in Perth, said that these countries must get their act together as Asia is the region supporting global stability. Furthermore, the President said that the leaders of advanced economies had done too little too late to tackle the deteriorating confidence in the financial markets. We believe that further political back-and-forth between Sri Lanka and the west only serves to bring the country closer to regional powers such as China.
