BJP Back On The Front Foot

While we are wary of reading too much into opinion poll data in India, the latest round of surveys reflects a growing mood of disenchantment towards the scandal-hit Indian National Congress (INC)-led coalition. With general elections not due until 2014, it is clearly too early to determine any major implications at a national level. Nevertheless, the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will be in a bullish mood heading into 2012's state elections in Uttar Pradesh, India's largest state by population, as well as Punjab and Gujarat, putting further pressure on the current government.
