The structure of China's growth model may be undermining social stability, and similarities with the 'Arab spring' have led to concerns over more widespread and organised protests against the government. While we believe that the Communist Party of China (CPC)'s strong support from the middle classes will prevent a MENA-style uprising, an economic slowdown will raise the likelihood of further protests. Meanwhile, the major risk to the economy comes from the CPC seizing more economic power in response to perceived threats to its political interests.
