Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou on June 19 named incumbent Premier Wu Den-yih as his running partner for his re-election bid in the January 2012 polls. Wu has strong connections to southern Taiwan, which tends to be more pro-independence, so the support he enjoys there and his focus on domestic issues could help Ma's re-election bid. The main opposition Democratic Progressive Party's presidential nominee, party chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen, has named her election committee, but not her vice presidential candidate. The presidential and legislative elections will be jointly held on January 14 2012, and we expect to see highly competitive contests.
