The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami called for a hartal (strike) across the country in a bid to put pressure on the current government to keep the current caretaker-government system in place for holding parliamentary elections. The move comes after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told a parliamentary committee that her administration would go by the Supreme Court's judgement, which declared the caretaker system unconstitutional. We are likely to see party rivalry heat up over the near term as the ruling government debates potential constitutional amendments.
