Economic Analysis - Strong Tourism Sector To Support Growth - JAN 2018


BMI View: The government ' s ongoing efforts to develop Fiji's tourism sector as another engine of growth are likely to continue reaping results and we expect visitor arrivals in Fiji to remain on a gradual uptrend. Initiatives that are aimed at broadening Fiji's tourist base and the continued development of the country ' s tourism infrastructure will provide additional support for the sector and we forecast real GDP to expand by 3.5% in 2017 and 3.2% in 2018.

We maintain our positive outlook on Fiji's tourism sector and expect the number of visitor arrivals to remain on a gradual uptrend amid the government's continued outreach efforts. The government and various agencies have embarked on tourism campaigns that are aimed at broadening Fiji's tourist base as well as to show visitors another side of Fiji, with an emphasis on sustainable tourism. We expect these campaigns to bear fruit and highlight that ongoing initiatives to further strengthen Fiji's infrastructure will provide additional support for the sector. We thus forecast real GDP to expand by 3.5% in 2017 and 3.2% in 2018.
